If December's a tough month for your pocketbook, you're not alone. But remember to keep lookin' up!
Cody Johnson's Christmas special airs on CMT tonight. And there's a part where he talks about a December long ago, when he and his wife Brandi were so broke ramen noodles were a "luxury."
They'd just gone to his parents' for dinner, and he put a $20 bill in a Christmas card, before realizing it was the last $20 they had. Then on their drive home, Merle Haggard's "If We Make It Through December" came on the radio.
He and Brandi started crying, but sometimes, things have a way of working out. Because when they got home, he checked the mail, and found his first two songwriting checks for $2,500 EACH. So they cried again for a different reason.
Cody covered "If We Make It Through December" on his 2021 Christmas album, and performs it again tonight. "CMT Presents: A Cody Johnson Christmas" airs at 9:00 PM, 8:00 Central on CMT.
